Chapter Eight

“I thought you might enjoy some company.”

Richard stood in the living room doorway of Samantha’s house. The TV was on with a black-and-white movie playing and Granny sat watching it. He was dressed and ready for dinner, though there was still a half hour before he was supposed to meet Samantha for their date.

At his words, Granny swiveled her head toward him and scowled.

He slowly entered the room and carefully took a seat next to her—not too close. He didn’t want to give her a chance to pull at his pants again.

Peculiar woman.

Was she always so unhappy? he wondered. He shifted and set his crutches aside.

“Uhh,” the woman grunted.

“Your granddaughter rented out an upstairs apartment to me and so it’d be nice if we got to know each other,” he said.

The woman lifted a hand and waved it in the air.

Richard nodded. Turning his attention to the TV, he watched for a few minutes before realizing what show this was. “Shop Around the Corner. I saw that aeons ago with my grandda. It’s about a woman who owns a store and this man who comes…” His voice trailed off as he realized it was very similar to what was going on in his own life at the moment.

A magazine hit him on the side of the head.

He jumped. Turning incredulous eyes toward the old woman, he asked, “Did you not like the magazine?”

She glared at him and pointed.

He picked it up and turned it over. He saw nothing that warranted such behavior. It was simply a chatty magazine that talked about different celebrities and what went on in their lives. He knew of it because his company took out a lot of ads in the magazine.

“Look,” he said, frustration growing as he set the magazine aside. “I can certainly say I am not sure what I’ve done, but possibly I’ve offended you in some way. Perhaps we should start over.”

The woman was once again watching the show, pretending he wasn’t there.

He sighed. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. He couldn’t communicate with her, after all.

He turned to see what was being played out on the telly and simply sat in silence. Then he picked up the magazine and started flipping through it…until he saw the advertisement. Surely the old woman hadn’t recognized the picture of him as a child in the Dunnington’s ad!

He glanced sideways at her with a curious look.

She was glaring at him again.

Oh-oh, he thought.

With a sigh he set the magazine aside. No wonder she’d bopped him on the head with it.

Finally, he said softly, “I love her, you know.”

Shifting, he straightened out his injured leg. His gaze wandered to where Samantha had sat last night, where the firelight had played off her beautiful hair. “I know it sounds crazy. I don’t even know why I’m telling you. I came in here hoping to win your approval. You see, you’re right, I’m not who she thinks and I’m going to try to correct that mistake tonight.
